Our organ recital series features some of the finest organists playing one of America’s great organs. Grace Cathedral’s 7,466-pipe Aeolian-Skinner instrument, the Charles B. Alexander Memorial Organ (1934), is one of the first and finest American classic-style organs and is among the largest church organs in the West. Experiencing music in our gothic cathedral with its unique acoustics, soaring nave, and jewel-like stained glass windows is a feast for the ears, eyes, and soul.
Please note there is an admission fee for visitors on Sundays from 1 to 5 pm. Those wishing to attend the organ recital must register in advance to avoid paying the fee. Thank you for your understanding.
This event is part of Spacious Grace, the cathedral’s annual free-form arts festival when we remove the pews and fill the space with exciting events. Now in its tenth year, Spacious Grace runs from February 18 to March 2. Explore the full lineup.

About the Organist
Jared Johnson is the Canon Director of Music at Grace Cathedral, where he leads the Cathedral Choir and oversees the music program. A native of Ohio, he is a graduate of Oberlin College and Yale University. Prior to his appointment in San Francisco, he was Director of Music at Trinity Cathedral in Columbia, SC, where he founded both a boys’ choir and a girls’ choir, and he taught on the music faculty of the University of South Carolina. A frequent guest conductor, he recently served as music director for the Saint Thomas Girl Chorister Course, and the Royal School of Church Music Course at Duke University. As an organ recitalist he has appeared in major venues throughout North America, Great Britain, and Australia, and his recordings appear on the Pro Organo and JAV labels. He previously served on the staffs of Trinity Church, Boston; Memorial Church at Harvard; and Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven, CT. Dr. Johnson is a member of the boards of the Association of Anglican Musicians, and of the Royal School of Church Music in America.

The concert will also be livestreamed here and on YouTube. The cathedral will open for seating at 3:30 pm. The entrance to the cathedral is at the top of the Great Steps. The accessible entrance is via the glass doors on Taylor Street or from the cathedral garage. Masks are strongly encouraged inside the cathedral.
