Bobby McFerrin circlesongschool 2023: July 24–July 29

July 24, 2023 @ 8:00 am - July 29, 2023 @ 8:00 pm

$950

If you love to sing, you are welcome to join circlesongschool 2023 with legendary vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin and his inspiring team of master teachers for a weeklong workshop full of joy-filled improvised music-making and audience art, fun and games for singers of all levels of experience.

“You get people together in a room and get them singing, and you instantly knock down all the walls – the creeds, the gender, age and race differences, everything. You’re all one at that point, lifting your voices.” – Bobby McFerrin

Enter the circle with vocal virtuoso Bobby McFerrin and his team of highly gifted faculty for a week of workshops, concerts and events, inspired by Bobby’s improvisational singing technique circlesongs. Welcoming to beginners, yet challenging for even the most advanced, this program invites us to embrace the freedom to play, sing, invent, and imagine — in music and in life. The program includes The Unbroken Circlesong, a 24-hour non-stop, uninterrupted circlesongs experience led by Bobby and the circlesongschool Faculty and students.

Bobby developed circlesongs as a solo performer, when he needed other voices to help realize his musical ideas. He gave the audience parts to sing, layering harmonies and rhythms, using call and response, conducting entrances, spontaneously composing choral pieces. All over the world, he found that circlesongs created beautiful music and cultivated a deep sense of community and joy. He further refined his circlesongs practice during years of touring with his group Voicestra, where circlesongs emerged from many influences: Americana, Bach, R&B, plainchant, Indian ragas, gospel, Balkan folksongs, invented languages, heavy metal, doo-wop, or any sound ever imagined.

The 2023 circlesongschool Faculty

The circlesongschool 2023 Faculty includes internationally acclaimed and diversely gifted teachers who have sung or taught Circlesongs with Bobby over many years: Rhiannon (Hawaii), Judi Vinar (Minnesota), Joey Blake (Rwanda) &  David Worm (Oakland), Destani Wolf (Berkeley), Bryan Dyer (Oakland), Tammi Brown (Santa Cruz), Tiago “Rizumik” Grade (Portugal), Varijashree Venugopal (India), Sofia Ribeiro (Portugal), Juan Andres Ospina (Colombia), Goussy Celestin (Haiti), Christiane Karam (Lebanon), and Manuel Linhares (Portugal).

Their skills range widely and each brings unique experience, exercises, and perspective. The program features opportunities for experimentation at all levels, drawing from body percussion, music theory, looping, Balkan and a cappella choirs, Carnatic singing, freestyle language improvisation, vocal technique, beatboxing, classical influences, and more.

What to Expect

This experiential workshop also cultivates and develops the traditional skills required for ensemble singing—blend, balance, tuning, and sensitivity. circlesongschool also builds the fundamentals of musicianship, including harmony, counterpoint, rhythmic precision, and deep listening. The program is transformational for singers, teachers, group facilitators, instrumentalists, conductors, activists—for everyone who loves to sing. Make music, create community, build trust, nurture creativity, and embrace life to the fullest. Every song, every voice, has a place in the circle.

In the inspired words of a prior participant: “This workshop has changed the entire direction of my life. It has reinvigorated my dedication to music, made me realize the importance of singing in the world, and helped me to understand the function of music in my own body, in an ensemble, and in the larger community and society. I use the techniques I learn at circlesongs every day with my classes, groups, and in my own performances, and I keep in touch with everyone I met at circlesongs.”

“What I love the most about leading and teaching circlesongs is that we open up people to the creative spirit that we all have within ourselves… because we all have it! We just don’t use it or we’re not aware of it or we’re afraid of it.” – Bobby McFerrin
