Sonic artist, environmental activist, Episcopal choir boy, Inuit enthusiast, rock n’ roll drummer, progressive jazz musician, Pulitzer Prize and GRAMMY winning composer. These are just a few of the titles applicable to monumental musical thinker John Luther Adams.
As a tribute to his varied work, SFJAZZ is holding the John Luther Adams Festival from July 26 to July 30. Fantastic musical events are planned for SFJAZZ, the Sutro Baths at Land’s End and our own beautiful and unique space. On Saturday, July 29 join us for Veils and Vesper, a drop-in immersive sound installation where you’ll have the chance to move around the cathedral and experience Adams’ “calming and beautiful” composition. The piece invites you to not only enjoy the music, but to explore how your perception of it changes as you move around the space.
“No composer has been more successful at using sound and music not just to portray place in a sonic way, like a realist painter or photographer, but also to make listeners feel the emotion of being there.” — San Francisco Classical Voice
“For listeners unfamiliar with Adams’ work — its vivid blend of energy and stillness, its exquisite gradations of instrumental color, its gift for invoking spiritualism without sanctimony — the week’s festivities promise an immersive range of musical experiences.” — San Francisco Chronicle
