Choral Evensong: Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of the Ordination of Florence Li Tim-Oi (In-Person and Livestream)

January 25 @ 5:30 pm - 6:15 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)

Grace Cathedral joins the Dioceses of New York and Los Angeles in national commemorations of Florence Li Tim-Oi, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of her ordination to the priesthood. Li served tirelessly and faithfully in the church, becoming the first woman ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Communion, preceding the irregular ordination of the Philadelphia 11 by three decades. We honor Florence Li Tim-Oi with a festal evensong, with the Right Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus, Bishop of California, officiating; the Rev. Dr. Fran Toy, assisting; and the Rev. Dr. Paula Nesbitt preaching.

One of the treasures of the Anglican tradition, Choral Evensong is a service of sung Evening Prayer. The service guides us to lay to rest the concerns of the day and prepare for the coming night. It combines music with readings from scripture, ancient and contemporary prayers, and a brief homily or reflection. The music includes psalms, canticles and an anthem, all sung by the choir, with congregational hymns and an organ prelude and postlude. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. This centuries-old service presents the finest of the Anglican musical tradition and is regularly sung in cathedrals and churches around the world.

Evensong is a service traditionally held near sunset focused on singing psalms, canticles, and prayers, ranging from meditative to jubilant. The Grace Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys sings during our Choral Evensong with an officiant. Join us at this mid-week choral service and experience one of the most beautiful liturgies in the Anglican tradition. (45 minutes)
