Online Evensong with Choir Recognition

June 04, 2020

5:15 pm

Filled with joyful music, some regard Evensong as one of the most beautiful and prayerful liturgies in the Anglican tradition, especially as celebrated in cathedrals. During this time when we cannot gather for worship in person, Grace Cathedral is offering Evensong online, layering images from the cathedral and its people over audio of past Evensong services.

Evensong expands the daily Evening Prayer service prayed by Episcopalians and Anglicans all over the world, with music by the cathedral choir. Combining elements from both Evening Prayer and Compline (Night Prayer), Evensong includes chants and anthems by the choir, readings from scripture, hymns sung by the congregation, and prayers for the church, the local community, and the wider world.

Each year at a special Thursday Evensong we celebrate our wonderful choristers of the Choir of Men & Boys, ages 7-14, as they head off on summer break, and especially graduating eighth graders as they finish five years in the choir. This year we will broadcast Evensong from our archives as we have in past weeks, a choir recognition Evensong from 2018, and following that the choristers, parents and music staff will gather for an online reception featuring our latest virtual choir project.

The audio for our Evensong broadcast on June 4, 2020 was recorded on Thursday, June 7, 2018. Read and download the leaflet here.

Please note: the embedded video below shows the stream for the next upcoming service at Grace Cathedral; it will align with this service listing on the day of the actual service.

During the academic year, our boy choristers sing at Thursday Evensong along with the men of the cathedral choir. When school is not in session, Evensong is sung by the men of the Choir.
