Grace Cathedral

This week, Grace Cathedral launches a new music series for this time under lockdown as a response to the global pandemic. Each week, one of the Grace Cathedral musicians will perform for us from their home. Piano, vocal and a host of other musical performance surprises await!

Our first performance is by Christopher Keady, the Assistant Director of Music, playing a piece by the composer John Ireland.  Christopher describes his choice in these evocative words:

“This is a piece by the wonderful John Ireland, which many of you know composed the wonderful anthem “Greater Love Hath No Man” we sing at Grace Cathedral. This is a short piece called “Month’s Mind.” The title refers to a funeral mass that’s held for someone one month after they’ve died. The idea of a “Month’s Mind” is keeping in mind being remembered after you’ve passed away. It’s a poignant, nostalgic, dreamy sort of mood. Personally, I’m surprised by the jazz language which Ireland has in here which I didn’t know he used in his church music. I hope you enjoy this piece and I hope you take care.”
