Vesper Light: Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe (In-Person and Zoom)
Sunday, December 12 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
A Eucharist reflecting evening themes, with hymns, Taizé-style chants and the spoken prayers of a hybrid in-person and online community. (45–60 minutes)
On this Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we are joined by guest preacher Miguel Bustos, Senior Director, Center for Social Justice at GLIDE. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico, and a sign of hope for many peoples throughout the Americas.
Christian tradition holds that in 1531, Mary, Mother of Jesus, appeared in two visions to St. Juan Diego and requested that a shrine to her be constructed in her honor. Diego took this request to the local bishop, who required a sign to authenticate the vision. Mary appeared again to Juan Diego, and instructed him to collect roses. Diego did so and returned to the bishop. When he opened his cloak, the roses fell to the floor and revealed the now celebrated image of the Virgin of Guadalupe inside.
Miguel Bustos is Senior Director of the Center for Social Justice at Glide Foundation in San Francisco. Most of his career has been as an appointed official to local and national elected officials: first as Policy Advisor for President Clinton and Vice President Gore at the White House; Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Director of Boards and Commissions for San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom; and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for Mayor Ronald V. Dellums. He has devoted his life to working with Latino, Native American, Asian, African-American and LGBT communities and organizations. He will be ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 4.
