Good Friday (In-person and Livestream)

Friday, April 15 @ 3:00 pm 4:00 pm

We honor the mystery of Jesus’ death and love for the world with the chanted St. John Passion, the veneration of the Cross, and solemn music by the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys.

The Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday begins in silent prayer. We then rise to greet the word of God, first from the prophet Isaiah. The rich imagery of the last of four Servant Songs, written to Israelite communities in the Babylonian exile, shapes the Christian imagination as we approach Jesus’ passion. St. John’s passion narrative is chanted in ancient, solemn tones. We then pray the Solemn Collects, holding fast to Jesus’ offering for the whole world and praying for its diverse peoples. We venerate the Cross, a sign of Christ’s absolute unity with the suffering of the world. The Eucharist is not celebrated; instead, we are sustained by the remnants of Bread from Maundy Thursday.

The Rt. Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus will preside, and the Rev. Mary Carter Greene will preach.

The cathedral’s worship and formation teams have prepared a PDF of resources to guide your prayers and worship as you join our live stream services from home during Holy Week — read and download it here.
