Exclusive Event for GraceArts Members: Art in Sacred Spaces with Bishop Rios
September 9 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Meet The Rt. Rev. Austin Keith Rios, 9th Bishop of California, and acclaimed artist Jim Campbell for a captivating conversation on art in sacred spaces, celebrating the long-awaited return of Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Light. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to connect with art, faith, and community leaders!
Bishop Rios was installed as the Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of California in August. He was formerly the rector of St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church in Vatican City, a church with gorgeous mosaics and stained glass, that featured orchestral and opera concerts six nights a week.
Jim Campbell is a contemporary San Francisco-based artist who is known for his work combining film, sound, and LED light installations. His artwork is included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the de Young Museum, San Francisco and the Berkeley Art Museum.
Jacob’s Dream: A Luminous Light is a 47-foot ladder of light and images representing the pathway between heaven and earth. The installation was a collaboration by 2016 artists-in-residence Jim Campbell and Benjamin Bergery, designed especially for Grace Cathedral. It was on view from December 2016 to October 2023, when it was removed for repair.
