Education for Ministry (EfM) Fall Book Series
Wednesday, October 21 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating until Wednesday, November 11
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a four-year program (but you only commit to one academic year at a time) designed for lay people who want to deepen their understanding of the bible, our church history, and our understanding of God in our experience (theology). The group is six to twelve people in any given year. Our wide range of backgrounds and opinions make for deep and rich discussions, and close spiritual friendships.
Each year we do a Summer Series designed both as a stand-alone exploration of a topic and as an introduction to EfM. Because we cannot meet in person at this time, we will meet via Zoom, and registration will be required. In order to make sure this is an authentic EfM experience, the Summer Series will be limited to 20 people, with preference given to those wishing to join the academic year program in the fall. All new academic year participants must attend at least two or three Summer Series meetings.
This year, we will be using Elaine Pagels’ Revelations: Visions, Prophecy, & Politics in the Book of Revelation. To quote the New Yorker review:
Pagels is an absorbing, intelligent, and eye-opening companion. Calming and broad-minded here, she applies a sympathetic and humane eye to texts that are neither subtle nor sympathetically humane but lit instead by fury.” — Adam Gopnik.
The reading for each week is generally around 40 or 50 pages. Join us if the book interests you, even if you have no interest in EfM.
By the end of the series, you’ll have a good idea about whether EfM is a program that will enrich your spiritual life. The academic year program has a tuition fee that includes all course materials including books; the Summer Series is free, except for the book. Each meeting stands on its own, so drop in for one or two sessions, even if you can’t make all of them. The book is available online, or by special order at your favorite bookstore. If you can, read “Chapter One: “John’s Revelation, Challenging the Evil Empire, Rome” before the first meeting. If you can’t, join us anyway!
