The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress is an Honorary Canon at Grace Cathedral, and a shining star of resilience while the world is focused on restoring physical and spiritual health. Many know Lauren is the energy behind the creation of the labyrinths at Grace Cathedral – her work here sparking a global revival that has resulted in thousands of new labyrinths around the world.

In her new book, The Path of the Holy Fool: How the Labyrinth Ignites our Visionary Powers, Artress reveals how the ancient labyrinth can provide a divine spark for the imagination and ignite our visionary powers for personal and global transformation.

Reviews from The Reverend Dr. Alan Jones and Catherine Anderson for The Path of the Holy Fool:

“The Path of the Holy Fool is a timely reminder that we can co-create the world we live in by learning to use our imagination for good. In this book Lauren Artress uses a mythic story to show us how imaginative processes can open us up to seeing the world in a new way while encouraging us to share our gifts with the world. Dr Artress offers many practical ways for us to become brave citizens of this beautiful planet. She reminds us that if we don’t know where to start, all we need do is step onto a labyrinth and be open to the mythic journey that begins with that first step on the path. We need reliable guides during these times, and this book provides just that.”

Catherine Anderson, Author of Meeting Your Soul on the Labyrinth

“Lauren Artress has long been a pioneer of a sane and compassionate spirituality which is at once both inclusive and deep. In her new book, The Path of the Holy Fool: How the Labyrinth Ignites Our Visionary Powers she brings together a strong spirituality — informed by the classical tradition — with a sound grasp of the strengths and challenges of depth psychology. Her vision of the Labyrinth as a doorway to the divine imagination is exactly right for these challenging times and her focus on the Holy Fool tradition enables her readers to embrace hope as well as the awesome mystery at the heart of things.”

The Reverend Dr. Alan Jones Dean Emeritus of Grace Cathedral

Every day educators are essential and the importance of their work cannot be emphasized enough. Now more than ever, it is important to protect and keep them in our minds, hearts and actions.

Below is a beautiful blessing from The Rev. Kristin Saylor:

O God, who came to dwell among us as a child – bless our children, and those who put their own safety at risk to care for them, especially the students and staff at our Community Preschool. As COVID-19 continues to threaten the fabric of our common life, grant our leaders wisdom and courage to prioritize the well-being of the most vulnerable in our midst, including early childhood educators. Amen.

Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day of reflection and honoring the lives lost due to anti-transgender violence. 2020 has been one of the deadliest years for the trans community due to anti-trans violence and has lead to considerable loss, a majority of which were trans women of color.  Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed at the end of Transgender Awareness Week- a week that aims to raise awareness and visibility around the transgender community and the issues they face.

Today we remember all the transgender people that we have lost due to violence and bigotry. Founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith in remembrance of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998, the day is meant to remember and honor the lives lost and in doing so illuminate the horrors of anti-transgender violence.

We invite you to and educate yourself with new stories and perspectives. Learn about how to be an effective ally from the folks at GLADD, watch films like Disclosure on Netflix that may broaden your perspective to the harmful ways the transgender community is portrayed in media, and read articles and resources from the team over at HRC.

Education helps us all understand the transgender community and the nuances of their experiences in our society.

Learn, and then use your voice to create change. Listen to the stories of others, learn from experiences that differ from yours, and advocate for justice. Remember and acknowledge the beautiful and vibrant individuals that have been lost due to anti-transgender violence. In doing this, we create a welcoming and safe future for all.

Remember- all human beings are worthy of respect, tenderness, acknowledgment, and equal rights. At Grace Cathedral we make a commitment to do all we can to uplift transgender individuals and amplify their voices in our community.

Could you use a healing salve for your head and your heart in this moment?

Season Two of Above the Fog is hosted by award-winning audio journalist Jen Chien, and from now until the election she’ll be sharing the voices and stories of people building a more just and loving world.

We’ve called this season Bridges, it’s about celebrating our shared humanity.

In episode one, you’ll be lifted by Kanwalroop “Roop” Kaur Singh as she describes moving through the painful complexities of personal and political history as a Punjabi Sikh American woman to become an agent of change.  She’ll offer personal stories from growing up in the Sikh community of the South San Francisco Bay Area as well as her years at UCLA School of Law – and how those experiences intertwine.

Before COVID-19 you could expect to see streams of yogis flocking towards Nob Hill and Grace Cathedral, gathering to sit and move together. With every inch of available space covered from the aisles to the pews, over 500 people would often gather in the cathedral to share space, community and spiritual energy. With the cathedral closed to in-person gatherings, Grace has been unable to offer new yoga classes to our beautiful community. Until now.

Yoga on the Labyrinth is pleased to announce new video yoga classes, beginning with a special class in partnership with Yoga Journal and Live Be Yoga. Join us online for a special benefit class for The Community Preschool on Tuesday, September 29th at 4 pm.

The Rev. Jude Harmon will greet the community, and instructor Darren Main will guide us through a gentle and restorative meditation and 30-minute asana practice from the labyrinth inside Grace. Egeman Sanli fills the experience with a magical soundscape of sitar and other mystical instruments. Om Shanti Om!

Looking ahead, Grace is busy planning our new online video series – inclusive experiences that allow our large community to participate when were not able to practice together inside the cathedral. Connect with us on our newsletter, and stay in touch on Instagram or Facebook as we develop safe and innovative ways to practice “on” the labyrinth.

We’re especially grateful for our collaboration with Monica Cadena and the Live Be Yoga Tour, and the talented folks at Grace and Yoga Journal in creative digital production as we wrap-up a very unique (and challenging!) National Yoga Month. ❤️

Yoga For All

Yoga is a practice and tradition that goes back over 5,000 years from South Asia. Since then it has diffused to be practiced all over the world with slight variations. Yoga is traditionally about spirituality and how it interacts with the body- you create harmony with your environment, mind and body which overall benefits your mental and physical health.

Yoga on the Labyrinth combines the traditional tenets of yoga in the beautiful environment that is the cathedral in order to bring you relaxation. Yoga and meditation instructor, Darren Main, takes you through gentle and restorative meditation and Asana practice.

The goal for Yoga on the Labyrinth is to be an inclusive and diverse space filled with individuals that come from all sorts of religious or spiritual practices. At Yoga on the Labyrinth, you experience yoga with an Episcopalian cathedral, that draws on the teachings and practices of Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism and caters to a community that varies from Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, atheists and agnostics as well as people from almost every Christian denomination.

Building a Foundation

The Community Preschool is a fantastic program that seeks to create an environment that children will experience out in the real world inside of the classroom. The preschool intentionally enrolls children from families with varied socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, religious traditions, gender identities and cultures.

The early childhood program creates an intentionally socio-economically diverse environment that encourages curiosity in order to view the world as scientists and explore their interests and the questions they may have about the world.

The program takes place 5 days a week for twelve months and serves children between the ages of three to five. The children are able to thrive in an environment that gives them individualized attention with a teaching ratio of one teacher for every 5 children. When you support the Community Preschool with a donation, you are supporting the strong foundation that allows these children to become positive forces in their communities and in the world.
