Touching the Heart with Food

Blog|Jennifer Davis

Twenty cups of tea, two plates of garlic noodles, and over an hour of great conversation, we went our separate ways…

I’m told the term Dim Sum translates to mean “touch the heart” and that is exactly what we did at our second small group activity at Lai Hong Lounge on Wednesday. Our small group met outside the restaurant, wind blowing and teeth chattering from the brisk morning chill, we anxiously entered the restaurant.

We were promptly seated at a round table with two hot, piping pots of Jasmine tea, which we poured and devoured throughout the entire meal. Being the tea enthusiast that I am, I instinctively knew the universal code for “we need more hot water,” which is to leave the teapot lid ajar.

“No chicken feet!”

I can still hear these words echoing in my head as I recall picking up the menu to determine what we all would be able to share amicably amongst our group. We settled on shrimp dumplings and pork buns to start out.

Noodles were a MUST with veggies and several types of dessert.

Each member of our group is a regular at our monthly Senior Community Day, yet we still needed to introduce ourselves. Names weren’t the only important details we learned about each other during this meal.

We talked about the recent trip to the Bishops Ranch, Blog Posts on our website, and how we update YouTube with our Sunday sermons for everyone to access weekly.

During our conversation, what became apparent to me was the warmth and appreciation we all shared for the Seniors with Grace program and how much FUN everyone is having.

At one point, we were talking about all the speakers we have and upcoming small group activities to come, and one senior commented that our program is the only one that is fun and interesting – we stand out in a good way.

By dessert (custard tarts, sesame buns, and coconut custard cake), we were filled with gratitude for the meal, each other, and the opportunity to touch each other’s hearts through the simple act of sharing small plates of delicious food.

Our next small group activity will be on Thursday, June 26, at the Walt Disney Museum at Fort Mason.
