The Purrfect Outing

They say cats choose their owners, they instinctively know who a good fit for them will be and who will not…
Regardless of how or when we find our furry companions, pets come into our lives for a reason: to bring us comfort and joy. For many, including myself, they are regarded as a member of the family. Our first small group activity was inspired by our love of pets, specifically, cats. On a sunny Monday afternoon, we took our seniors to the Kittea Cat Lounge and Café in the Mission, in the hope that one of us would be chosen by one of them.

Those who signed up to join us were so enthusiastic and eager for the big day, as they showed up early and couldn’t wait to meet the kitties. All seven of us met outside the café, bought some delicious treats for ourselves at the bakery next door and then proceeded to enter the space.
NO SHOES ALLOWED!
The first order of business was to remove our shoes – very important, if any of us were not wearing socks, ones could be purchased or a cover for our feet would be provided. We then selected a complimentary beverage (hot tea, sparkling water…) of our choice to enjoy.

Another important rule was to refrain from picking up the cats and to let them come to us. Respecting space and barriers were a big theme here, we wouldn’t open doors without assistance, and we were instructed to leave the sleeping cats be.

The room with the cats was amazing, it was filled with cat trees, individual climbing posts and cozy boxes for them to burrow in. Some of the cats were open and curious and others slept the entire time.
It was interesting to learn that most of the cats were “permanent residents”, a mere ten were up for adoption. There was a total of 30 cats in the room with us that day, so it was good to see most of the cats were well cared for and had a “forever home” at the café.

Our group had a great time petting the ones who were friendly and sitting with those who were a bit more reserved. One senior was so taken with one of the cats, she insisted on having her picture taken with it.
One cat named Dolly Parton jumped on a table and tried to sniff out my snacks, she lost interest quickly and moved on. Another cat I nicknamed “the sheriff” stole the show as it sat on a high shelf watching everything go down, peering at us all.

When our time was up, we all gathered our belongings, shoes and all, bought some souvenirs and headed our separate ways. Each one of us left with a smile on our face and gratitude for the afternoon of fur and fun!

Our next small group activity will be in April to enjoy some Dim Sum in Chinatown together!
