Funeral services are scheduled as the Cathedral calendar and space
permit, in the Nave or one of the smaller chapels. There are fees for
space use, clergy, verger, and musician time, but pledging members of
the congregation and those owning Columbarium space (see below) are exempt
from space use fees.
The officiating clergy will plan the service with the family members or
friends of the deceased. As with weddings, other clergy may assist, and
music must be approved by the Music Department.

"Columbarium" is derived from the Latin word columba, "dove," a symbol of
God's spirit and peace. Historically, the church has laid the dead to
rest in church yards and cathedrals. In keeping with this tradition,
Grace Cathedral has established a Columbarium for the safekeeping of
cremated remains. Making plans for one's remains and memorial service
well in advance of death is a great gift to family, friends and
survivors.
Grace Cathedral offers an opportunity to lay to rest the cremated remains of a loved one in a beautiful and sacred setting. Acquisition of a Columbarium space includes a committal service in the Chapel as well as the opportunity for a larger memorial service in another area of the Cathedral. Click here for more information about how to acquire a Columbarium space.
The Columbarium is located in the consecrated Chapel of Saint Francis on
the second level of the Cathedral's bell tower, where it will be
maintained in perpetuity.
Niche spaces are available in this dignified setting where future
generations can remember loved ones. Niche prices vary according to
location.
Quarterly requiem services are held in the Chapel of Saint Francis to commemorate the anniversaries of the deaths of those who are remembered there. The chapel is open for meditation and prayer at scheduled times and by appointment with the Columbarium Administrator, available at (415) 749-6325 or columbarium@gracecathedral.org
